The osteoporosis self-assessment tool (OST) in men is a simple formula that predicts risk of osteoporosis for the patient based solely on current weight and age. Bone health in this study was determined by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning, and the OST was found to be 93% sensitive and 66% specific to predicting DXA diagnosed osteoporosis. This is a rapid and useful bedside tool to help trigger further investigation into bone health for patients with an increased risk profile.
A score is derived through:
OST = [weight (kg) - age (years)] divided by 5
OST Scores:
- -20 to -1 are HIGH RISK
- -1 to 4 are MODERATE RISK
- 4 to 20 are LOW RISK
