The Pack Years in Smoking tool provides primary care providers and relevant specialists with a common language to quantify smoking use. Recreational or occasional smoking portend different risk profiles than heavy daily users, and this provides clinicians with some implicit information about patient lung health. It is also a tool that is helpful to quantify lifelong habits that have varied in severity.
